2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Science Festival

Welcome back to all MIEC students for term 3, 2018. Term 3 will be a busy and exciting term at MIEC. Students will be visiting the Australian Museum for the National Science Week. Selected students will be watching a Shakespearean theatre performance at the Sydney Opera House. We will be having some cool native visitors (lizards, snakes etc) from the Reptile Show incursion. Additionally, everyone will be participating in the weekly National Football League (Australian football) training session. So come to school and be prepared to learn and have fun! Every day is a great day at MIEC!

NSW State Parliament

Level 3 students visited NSW State Parliament and Botanical Gardens to learn about government and Australian history. The students role played in Upper and Lower Houses and learned about the Australian government. After lunch, the students went on a guided tour at the Botanical Gardens to learn about indigenous plants and the first settlement.

Cross Country Carnival

On Monday, we attended the MHS and MIEC Cross Country Carnival. Some students ran up to 7.5 kilometres, and many IEC students placed in their top 10 for their age group. We finished the day off with a BBQ hosted by the SRC students. Well done students. What a fantastic day!

Level 3 Students went to Bondi Beach to visit the annual Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. The students walked along the beautiful Sydney coastline as they admired sculptures from artists around the world. After lunch, students participated in an art workshop with Swedish artist Karl Chilcott and learned about the artistic process.

MHS Athletics Carnival

Last Thursday, MIEC attended the MHS Athletics Carnival. Students competed in a number of track & field events: discus, shot put, long jump, high jump, 100m, 200m, 400, 800m and 4x100m relay. We are so proud of the effort that everyone put in! Many of our students placed 1st or 2^nd in their event and will be representing us at Zone. Thanks to Mr Elder for organising such a great event.

NRL Gala Day

Last week, all MIEC students attended the NRL In League In Harmony Gala Day. Students participated in a number of fun workshops before competing against other teams in short games of touch rugby. HSIE Excursion to NSW State Parliament

Last week all students from MIEC went on an excursion to the state parliament of New South Wales. In HSIE this term, students have been learning about the Australian Government and how it affects their lives. To consolidate their studies in HSIE, students participated in a role play, which followed the proceedings of a real day in parliament. Students of the "Opposition" worked hard to oppose a bill, which would see the legal drinking age changed from 18 to 21 years of age. They proposed a safe-drinking course that aimed to educate young adults about the dangers of consuming alcohol.

Cross Country Carnival 2017

On Monday students of MIEC participated in the Marrickville High School Cross Country Carnival. Students ran 2.5km, 5km or 7.5km races, depending on their age group. Many of our students placed in the top seven for their age groups and will be representing MIEC at Zone.

All MIEC students went on an excursion to Hyde Park Barracks as part of their HSIE course on Australian History. Students have been introduced to Early Australian History from both a European and Indigenous perspective to prepare them for high school. Students enjoyed a guided tour through the Barracks and got to lie in the hammocks where convicts once rested. Thanks to Ms. Sainsbury for organising a fun and informative day out.

2016 Sydney Observatory

All MIEC students visited the Sydney Observatory as part of their science course about the solar system and the universe. Students walked through the historical The Rocks district of Sydney and enjoyed the beautiful view of Sydney from Observatory Hill. Sydney Observatory staff took students on an guided tour of the museum. Students laid back and enjoyed time travelling in the Planetarium and watched 3D movies about space. They used modern and antique telescopes to see far away objects and learned about the history of astronomy. It was an enjoyable and educational day for all.

2016 Morisset Camp

MIEC students and teachers went camping at Morisset (near Newcastle). We all had a lot of fun hanging out with friends and completing challenging activities. Everyone got down and dirty in Mud World, conquered their fear of heights on Super Drop, High Ropes, Giant Swing and Leap of Faith and raced around in the cool creek water during Raft Building and Canoeing.

It was an amazing experience for everyone!

What a day! Sculpture by the Sea.

All of level 3 students went on excursion to Bondi Beach to view and participate in Sculpture by the Sea. The exhibition had over one hundred sculptural works by Australian and International artists along the coastal walk between Bondi and Tamarama beaches. The students walked, talked, looked and experienced the extraordinary exhibition and artist lead workshop. What a way to learn English

MIEC welcomes back all our current students and offers greetings to our newly arrived term 4 students. MIEC has a busy term planned for all. This term sees our students go on our 3 day camp to the north coast of NSW, which will be three days of fun and laughter. Also, two MIEC students will represent us at the annual IEC Oratory Showcase to be held at Lurnea IEC in November. Finally, MIEC will send 3 sporting teams to compete in the annual IEC Homebush games. Its going to be an exciting time at MIEC this term.

The students went shopping in Marrickville in the morning to purchase all the ingredients and then returned to the kitchen to make their savoury delights. 2016 Science Festival Excursion

On 26^th of August 2016. MIEC Level 2 and 3 students went on an excursion to the Australian Museum for the Science Festival. Students attended the fantastic science expo where they experienced many new scientific research and technologies. They also attended hands-on chemistry workshops from University of New South Wales and Macquarie University. It was a fun and educational day!

AFL DAY

MIEC performed fantastically well at the most recent AFL IEC Gala Day held at Blacktown Sports Centre. Our girls won three matches and our junior boys were only beaten in the last few seconds of the grand final. It was another remarkable effort from the MIEC boys and girls as they took on IECs with double and triple our student population. Well done everyone.

2016 Jeans for Genes Day

Every dollar raised on the day helps scientists at Children's Medical Research Institute discover treatments and cures, to give every child the opportunity to live a long and healthy life.

MIEC wish to welcome all of our existing students as well as our newly arrived students to term 3. Term 3 promises to be a very exciting term with the AFL Gala Day and the Australian Science Festival just two of the events MIEC will be involved in. I wish to give an early reminder for our students and their families that MIEC has now introduced a three day camp on the north coast of NSW in term 4. The camp will be a great way to finish off the school year. Also, another reminder that MIEC's Tuition Centre is now up and running, providing our students with homework and welfare support every Tuesday afternoon. So far it has been a great success. Storm Update

Despite the storm and water damage caused by the weekend's extreme weather MIEC is operating as per normal but with minor alterations to recess and lunch arrangements. Students will be permitted to remain inside classrooms during recess and lunch under the supervision of staff.

Students are safe and being supervised.

We anticipate that operations across the entire school will be back to normal tomorrow unless advised otherwise.

MIEC's trip to Parliament House

Last week, MIEC took the opportunity to see how democracy works. Levels two and three visited state parliament and witnessed firsthand the proves of law making in NSW. Students experienced what it was like to conduct business in the house and sit in the Speakers Chair. The trip proved a valuable learning tool for our students as it provided an up-close look at democracy in action.

On Friday 20 May Marrickville High School and Intensive English Centre celebrated World Cultural Diversity Day by holding a 'Carnival of Culture'. MIEC's TUITION CENTRE BEGINS

Term 2 signals the beginning of an exciting time at MIEC. Commencing in week three is MIEC's new Tuition Centre for International Students. 10 students will be invited each term to receive specialist tuition in English to assist their learning. Classes run each Tuesday afternoon from 2.25 pm to 4.00 pm. Students are provided with a light afternoon tea before receiving nearly two hours of extra tuition from our highly trained specialist teachers. The extra assistance will assist students with their transition into high school. Students receive individualised education programs focusing on reading, writing and speaking skills.

Term two at MIEC appears another busy one, firstly we have our annual cross-country carnival next Monday where our students get to match their physical endurance qualities against those students in the High School. ANZAC Day Commemorative Assembly

Marrickville IEC and High School commemorated ANZAC Day at a special school assembly on the 6th of April 2016. Students listened to the honorary guest Mr Birdsall from Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club give his address about his experience of war and the significance of ANZAC Day. MIEC students Taylor Li and Valentin De Roany read the poem 'Such a Shame' by Terry Bennetts at the assembly.

MIEC celebrates Harmony Day

MIEC made a trip to Beverly Hills IEC to celebrate Harmony Day with students from Beverly Hills and Kogarah IECs. Students got the opportunity to try a variety of foods from all over the world including Korean pancakes and Lebanese tabouli. After lunch our MIEC students then participated in both volleyball and soccer competitions. I can report that our girls and boys soccer team went through the competition undefeated. Other activities enjoyed by MIEC students included nail painting and henna tattooing. A great day was had by all.

On the 16^th of February, class 1A, 2C and 3 walked to a restaurant .We had lunch together .We sat beside students from different countries and talked to each other in English. We practiced speaking English when we were eating our lunch. We had some French fries and fried chicken with cheese and tomatoes and special sauce. It was very delicious and we all loved it !

Last week Mr Grecki and Ms Cowin took 1A on their famous orientation to Sydney excursion. 1A took in all the familiar sites including a walk across the Harbour Bridge and a visit to the Opera House followed by a lazy lunch in the Sydney Botanical Gardens. MIEC extends a warm welcome to all for 2016. We have welcomed another 16 students this term from all over the world. They have all settled in quickly at MIEC and are already working hard on developing their language skills. 2016 will be another exciting year at MIEC. Term one we have our Special Swimming Scheme for all our students. Through the scheme each student undertakes an intensive 2 week learn to swim program equipping them with water safety skills. MIEC also has its annual Visual Arts excursions to the museums and galleries of Sydney along with our term 1 science and HSIE excursions to Sydney. Finally, MIEC will hold its annual Harmony Day celebrations on March 21 at which we celebrate the diversity of cultures in Australia. The day will include food stalls and displays of national dress and dances.

SURFS UP at MIEC. Students from MIEC had an awesome day surfing the waves at Cronulla beach this week. Our students learnt about surf safety and how to handle a surfboard. For many it was their first time in the open ocean. All the students showed great bravery and had enormous fun splashing about in the breakers.

2015 Sculpture by the Sea

On a beautiful sunny day, Level 2 and Level 3 MIEC students went on an excursion to Bondi Beach to see the annual Sculpture by the Sea. Students admired the many wonderful sculptures from artist around the world. 2015 Bandana Day

The Student Representative Council has been enthusiastically organising the 2015 Bandana Day to raise funds for CanTeen. CanTeen aims to raise funds to help children living with cancer. The SRC students have been selling colourful bandanas and is holding a lucky prize raffle on Friday, 30th of October. The SRC has raised over $200 so far.

Hello MIEC

Welcome to our old MIEC students and to our new arrivals. I hope you all had a great holiday and are ready to study hard in term 4. Term 4 will be a busy term at MIEC. Activities will include our cricket and netball programs and the very exciting Surf Lifesaving program to be held at Cronulla Beach. MIEC students will also compete in the IEC Oratory Showcase competition conducted at Cabramatta IEC this term. In addition there will be a host of fun excursions planned for MIEC students which enhance the academic experience of each individual learner. Clearly its going to be a fun filled term at MIEC.

HSIE Level 3 Class Debate

Every term as part of the level 3 HSIE program, students take part in a class debate. Students spent the term studying about Indigenous Australia and the struggle for freedom. A debate about the ‘Stolen Generation' was held in front of level 2B students with Ms Holmes as adjudicator. After a robust debate, the affirmative team's arguments and elaborations as well as their use of persuasive language techniques won the day.

The Science Festival

Level two and level three students experienced an exciting day at the Sydney Science Festival held at the Australian Museum, Sydney. Students participated in workshops such as the hands-on chemistry and biology lessons as well as the physics for fun program. MIEC students learnt science through practical participation. Students reported that it was a fun way to learn about Science.

Last Wednesday students in 1S and 2D spent a wonderful day exploring the sites of Sydney. Students walked across the Sydney Harbour Bridge then visited the Sydney Opera House. They then relaxed with lunch and a leisurely stroll around the Botanical Gardens. What a beautiful way to spend the day.

Our AFL Success

Last Thursday 48 brave MIEC students left Marrickville to compete in the IEC AFL Gala Day competition at Blacktown International Sports Centre. Students from IECs all over Sydney came to compete on the day. It is with great pride that we can report that our girls team made it to the grand final of the competition. Unluckily for our girls, they just went down in the final in a very close game. The boys team also performed extremely well wining the majority of their matches only to be beaten by the eventual winners of the competition, Bankstown Seniors College.

Both teachers and students reported that it was great fun competing in the friendly competition with teams from other IECs. Well done to all those students who proudly represented MIEC last week.

2015 Term 3 NRL In league In Harmony Program

This term, MIEC students are participating in the National Rugby League (NRL) In League In Harmony Program. The program aims to promote social cohesion by tackling social issues such as social disengagement, racism, gender equality, and bullying.

Each week students participate in theory and practical based activities which have been designed around the NRL's values of Excellence, Inclusiveness, Courage and Teamwork. By being a part of the program students improve their interpersonal skills by acknowledging, appreciating and celebrating the diversity amongst their peers and the wider community.

Climbing and Caving Day

MIEC students enjoyed a fun filled day at Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym. Students had the opportunity to challenge themselves by scaling the massive climbing wall and delving into the cave course. Not only did they learn the skills associated with each activity but also they learnt the importance of working together to overcome obstacles.

MIEC Refugee Day Celebrations

MIEC participated in Refugee Week by attending the Refugee Day celebrations at Marrickville Youth Resource Centre. Students had a fun filled day celebrating cultural diversity through dance and art. Students also celebrated the spirit of diversity by tucking into a beautiful Lebanese BBQ. The day acted as a reminder of the valuable contribution refugees and migrants have made to this wonderful country.

Message from the Head Teacher

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students

Welcome back to the new school term. It's been a busy start to the term with lots of things happening in the IEC. As new Head Teacher at MIEC, I have been warmly welcomed by both staff and students. Thank you all for helping me settle in to my new school. I'm very excited to be at Marrickville IEC working with a wonderful group of students and a very dedicated staff.

There are many great things planned for this term including excursions to the Sydney Museum of Contemporary Art, Featherdale Wildlife Park and a fantastic three day overnight excursion to Canberra. The Canberra excursion will allow our students to visit some of Australia's most well-known landmarks. All our excursions provide a special opportunity for MIEC students to witness and participate in all aspects of Australian life and culture, outside of the normal classroom experience.

There are lots of other exciting events occurring at the IEC this term as well. All students are participating in the Sydney Swans AFL coaching clinics. This is a six week program delivered by the players of the Sydney Swans. MIEC students will not only learn the skills of an iconic Australian game but also the importance of working as a valued member of a team.

Finally, the MIEC Leavers Ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 25, where we will celebrate the outstanding academic and sporting achievements of our students. The following Friday is the MIEC fun picnic day which is a time for all to relax and prepare for the holidays.

Parents and Guardians please note the MIEC Parent/ Teacher afternoon will take place in week 8 on Tuesday June 9, we encourage you all to come and discuss your child's progress with our friendly staff.

Barista School

Ten students from MIEC were selected to be part of the Barista School Program. The students attended a workshop with Ms Cowin and have learned the art of coffee making. They have continued their hard work during special skills classes to make the perfect cup of cappuccino. All students will receive certificates from the Canterbury Hurlstone Park Training Centre for their hard work.

ANZAC Day 2015

Marrickville High School and Intensive English Centre commemorated the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli. Guest speakers from the Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL) spoke of their memories and experience at war. Rachel Lin and Eunice Lopes Da Silva from the MIEC Level Three class also gave a speech about the importance of freedom and diversity in Australia.

FAREWELL AND WELCOME

On Tuesday 3rd February 2015 we farewelled our much loved IEC Head Teacher Mr Dimitri Kametopoulos whose tireless devotion, commitment, passion sense of humour and individual care will be sorely missed by the entire Marrickville community.

Once again we wish Mr K a seamless transition and the best of luck in his new position as Head Teacher at the Bankstown Senior IEC and look forward to his visit very soon!!

Ms Caroline Holmes kindly stepped in as Head Teacher replacement until the end of Term 1,2015, immediately demonstrating the energy, professionalism, experience and dedication the role requires. We also welcome Mr P. Patana taking Ms Holmes' teaching load and Ms L. Ou, who comes to us with many years of experience and will no doubt contribute to the quality teaching we have come to expect at Marrickville IEC. Welcome new staff!

Lastly, we anticipate this to be one of our best terms with many excursions and field trips on offer promising an exciting and highly purposeful term with experiential opportunities for learning across all Key Learning Areas. Special Skills

As usual Term 1 offers a range of special co-curricular and extra-curricular interest activities for all our IEC students experience something new or just brush up on existing talents, skills or knowledge. Students choose a different Special Skill activity each term from a wide selection including: Choir/Singing, Drama, Drumming, Games, Gardening, Greek/Italian, Juggling, Making Movies, Making Art, Movies and Reviews and this term introducing Yoga.

Valentine's Day Fund Raiser

Cup cakes will be on sale this Friday 13th February for IEC and High School students to celebrate that someone special in your life. Much appreciation goes to Ms Stratigos and all the staff and students involved in organising this fun and romantic event!!

What a FANTASTIC event this was!! The whole world was here! All the students were here at Marrickville who studied at the the Intensive English Centre this year and as far back as in 2011! The current students were delighted to see old friends.

There was an assembly at 12.00pm with a welcoming speech from the Head Teacher of the IEC Mr Dimitrios Kametopoulos and then everyone was invited to a sumptuous luncheon!! At the end of the day, ice cream was given to everyone! What a treat!! A great day!!

Then many games took place at the Top Field which added to the fun of the day. There was musical chairs, tug 'o war, egg and spoon race and other outdoor activities. The weather, fortunately, after many days of rain, put on a lovely, warm, sunny afternoon for all of us!

THANK YOU TO ALL THE EX-IEC STUDENTS who came and made this the BIGGEST EVENT EVER!!!

IEC SPEAKING SHOWCASE! A FANTASTIC EVENT! Wednesday 19 November 2014

"What a fantastic showcase!" "What excellent speakers!" These were only a few of the exclamatory remarks many people made after the speaking (oratory) performance of newly arrived students at the 2014 Oratory Showcase that took place on Wednesday 19 November at Chester Hill Intensive English Centre in the Hall of Chester Hill High School.

It was indeed a marvelous event to see or rather… listen to over 25 students who are studying English at various Intensive English Centres across Sydney and as far as Warrawong in the Wollongong area take to the stage and speak on as smorgasbord of topics including "Tolerance", "Reality TV: Rubbish or Relevant?", "Life as a young refugee", "What if we all spoke the same language", "The language of sport", "Learning different languages", "What makes a good country?" and "Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgenders".

2 speakers from Beverly Hills IEC, Cabramatta IEC, Chester Hill IEC, Evans IEC, Fairfield IEC, Holroyd IEC, Kogarah IEC, Lurnea IEC, Marrickville IEC, Marsden IEC, Miller IEC, Warrawong IEC and Chatswood IEC converged upon Chester Hill with their accompanying teachers and other classmates to try to impress with their oratory skills and they did! The Hall hosted over than 500 IEC and public High School students, including students from private schools, such as MLC and Emmanuel School, teachers and parents. In particular from our Marrickville IEC, the 2 speakers were students Karissa Cai and Cheuk Ho Liu. They spoke about NBA Basketball and Religion respectively. Very interesting topics!

The event is now in its third year and is growing. The genesis of this inter-IEC event belongs to the Head Teacher of Chester Hill IEC, Ms Mee Lin Liau whose Intensive English Centre hosts more than 150 newly-arrived students of migrant and refugee backgrounds as well as International students. Ms Liau has been the driving force behind this idea and Chester Hill has been the place to be every November to appreciate the efforts of students who have less than 6 or 9 months in Australia in public speaking!

This year's event concluded with an outdoor, lavish multicultural luncheon with Asian, Middle Eastern, African and southern European and south American foods for all the participants as well as dancing under beautiful, spring weather.

PARENT/GUARDIAN-TEACHER MEETING-Tuesday 2 December 2014, 3.30pm-6.00pm

Dear Parents and Guardians

Our Semester 2 (Term 3 & 4) Parent/Guardian-Teacher Meeting is happening on Tuesday 2 December 2014 in the School Library from 3.30pm-6.00pm. Parents and Guardians can come from 3.15pm and wait outside the IEC. The teachers will be on ground floor and on the first floor as well. Their will be interpreters as well as our Teachers' Aides to help out in Chinese, Vietnamese, Spanish, Portuguese, Greek, Italian and other languages. Teachers will give approximately 5 minutes to each family and talk about their child's progress at school. This is done as it will allow families to see the teachers that they have been requested to do so and that there is no unnecessary delays in the meeting.

This is an important time to come along and discuss with the teachers about your child's progress. A reminder that guardians of International students need to attend this meeting, as this is part of their agreement to host students or they need to contact the school, via email preferably or via phone to make alternative arrangements, if possible.

Please ensure you come and meet us. Tea and coffee will be available!

MARRICKVILLE COUNCIL TEACHES OUR STUDENTS SORTING OUT WASTE & RECYCLING

The students at Marrickville Intensive English Centre are very lucky indeed as they are taught life-long skills. Kirsten Pitot, the Enironment Officer, Resources Education and David Prasad, staff member from Marrickville Council in conjunction with our HSIE (Human Society and its Environment) teachers Ms Holmes and Ms Castro have been teaching the IEC students practical lessons on waste management and how to recycle the rubbish we collect. On Tuesday 11 November and Friday 21 November, the Council came to the school and taught some of our Level 2 students what to do with waste and spoke to them about how rubbish affects the Environment. Students with gloves and special pincers were taken through the...experience in sorting out the waste collected kindly by our school cleaners. Thank you to Marrickville Council and the HSIE teachers for this important initiative! Now are students can be proud in being environmentally sensitive!

INDONESIAN SENIORS VISIT MARRICKVILLE IEC-Tuesday 18 November 2014

SELAMAT DATANG! was the key word to the Indonesian visitors who came for a visit on Tuesday 18 November. The 25 senior mainly people from various parts of Indonesia are part of the Sydney "Friendship Force" and they have come to Australia for approximately two weeks in November to get a "taste" of Australia and the culture or multicultural character of the country. One of the aspects was to visit a school and Marrickville hosted them in the morning with a welcoming speech from the Principal Ms Dassaklis, the Deputy Principal Mr Sciacca and the Head Teacher of the IEC Mr Kametopoulos and then after morning tea, the visitors were taken on a tour of the school. MIEC students Haikal Masduqi and Mutia Iftinany, both from Indonesia, who are studying at the school, also made the guests feel welcomed both in bahasa Indonesia and English! The Indonesian visitors were very impressed by the High school and the IEC, the various school programs as well as the hospitality shown.

SCULPTURES BY THE SEA EXCURSION-Tuesday 28 October 2014. A GREAT WAY TO SEE SYDNEY!

As part of the Visual Arts program 90 students, Teachers and School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs) went on an excursion to view the extraordinary 2014 "Sculptures by the Sea" exhibition on Tuesday 28 October 2014 . Selected students participated in artist led art-making workshops with Elyssa Sykes Smith and Harry Vastutabu (and the collective Machine Green) .They created artworks and talked and laughed and thoroughly enjoyed the art-making. Other students went with Chasna Harper, an ESL Educator, for a tour of the exhibition where they leant about the sculptures and engaged in discussion to respond to the artworks.

After a huge group picnic lunch in the park at Tamarrama beach we walked the beautiful coastal pathway to Bondi viewing all the amazing artworks from all around the world.

Enjoying art at Sculpture by the Sea, what wonderful way to learn English!

MIEC STUDENTS AT NSW UNI FOR MOSAIC 2014 PRESENTATION NIGHT-Tues 28 Oct 2014

What a great evening that was! Marrickville IEC students alongside with their Head Teacher, Mr Dimitrios Kametopoulos, went to NSW University on Tuesday night, 28 October 2014, for the Presentation of their works in the Special Skills class "MOSAIC" program in Term 3.

The students in this Special Skills class (Special Skills classes always run on Thursdays, Period 4 at school and they are an Elective for the students), explored various themes, such as Multiculturalism, Racism, Understanding cultures, Refugees and Religion in today's world, with the assistance of fantastic NSW University students. The university students came on Thursdays in Term 3, wearing their characteristic MOSAIC pink t-shirts, and helped the IEC students in class, under the guidance of the Special Skills MOSAIC teacher, Mr Dimitrios Kametopoulos. The students made posters and Power Point presentations and these were submitted to the MOSAIC program.

On Tuesday night, October the 28th, there was a presentation of Marrickville's works amongst other participating schools and IECs to be displayed for the University officials, MOSAIC organisors, family and friends! The MCs Gen and Sophie, University students welcomed all the guests and Pearl Kim, the MOSAIC University Coordinator in her welcome spoke about the history of the program and its importance from a University point of view.

Mr Kametopoulos was the keynote speaker of the Presentation Evening. In his speech, he mentioned that MIEC was the first Intensive English Centre to participate alongside with High Schools in the Sydney region. Just because the IEC students' English levels are at a developing level, that doesn't mean that they don't have a voice, Mr Kametopoulos pointed out, in his talk. Students can convey meaning and sense of what they see around them, particularly on topical issues, Mr Kametopoulos added. He concluded by saying that the MOSAIC program is a "fantastic program" connecting students to a University, challenging students to think about topical issues and providing a "voice" for all students, even for our new arrivals!!

2014, TERM 4, STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL (SRC)

Marrickville Intensive English Centre has a very active Student Representative Council (SRC) and it is a pleasure to have these student leaders take initiatives and support the school in many areas, including raising money for the Children Hospital and for Children with Cancer.

Our SRC is led by our IEC Teacher, Ms Victoria Sainsbury, who is proud of the group, as well as all the staff at school. The first initiative is Bandanna Day on Friday 31 October 2014 to raise money for a worthy cause! Students cannot wait for this to happen soon enough!

Term 4, 2014 started on Tuesday 8 October. Classes for students have already started. All enrolments are welcomed during Term 4, anytime! Please call our Office to make a booking for enrolment and for assessment.

At Marrickville IEC, we always welcome NEW high school aged students and families ANYTIME during the term who live in our drawing area (from Drummoyne/Balmain to the north to Tempe in the south and Newtown to the east to Burwood in the west).

The parents/guardians and the child must both attend the enrolment appointment. To make it easier, we ask that the families telephone the school on 9550 0251 from Monday to Friday between 8.30am-3.15pm to make an appointment, so this can be arranged.

In general, the following documents are required:

Student passport and copy of e-Visa, if applicable
Parent/Guardian photo ID, showing current address
If the student is an International Student, DEC International documents with S0***** reference number
3 x passport size photos
Reports from school overseas

Dear Families

Please note the from Saturday 20 September 2014 - Monday 6 October 2014, (2 weeks & 1 extra day), the IEC will be closed for the Spring 2 week holiday period.

The school email marrickvil-i.school@det.nsw.edu.au will be checked periodically during this spring holiday but responses to emails will not always be prompt.

The Office will be open for telephone or in-person enquiries on Tuesday 7 October 2014 and for making appointments and bookings for English language assessments and enrolments of new International and local students. The Office staff will inform families what they need to bring along on the day of the enrolment. Families can also check under "Our School" tab and visit "Enrolment Procedures" as this informs what items parents/guardians and students need to bring along for enrolment at Marrickville IEC.

Please note, there will be no classes or lessons for students on Monday 6 October-Public Holiday-Schools are closed.

* ALL STUDENTS must return to school on Tuesday 7 October at 8.30am for an 8.45am start. There will be an assembly at 8.45am for all students and then students will go to their new classes.*

MARRICKVILLE IEC & HS STUDENTS HELP CHILDREN IN NEED-Friday 5 September 2014

At Marrickville High School and at Marrickville Intensive English Centre, the students and in particular the SRC (Student Representative Council) get out of their way often to support the community and especially children who are in need. The coordinating teachers, Ms Alison Vokal for the High School and Ms Victoria Sainsbury for the IEC organised a joint "Jeans for Genes day' in mid August, giving the opportunity to our students to contribute some money towards the Children's Cancer Council and to wear jeans to...help the genes' research! On Friday 5 September, a representative from a philanthropical organisation, Ms Charmaine Macguire was present at the IEC Assembly to receive the...big cheque offered to her on behalf of our Marrickville School. Well done to the students, to the teachers as well as to the SRC coordinators for their joint initiative, all showing their sensitivity towards our community needs!!

SPECIAL SKILLS-Making Art at Marrickville Youth Resource Centre

At Marrickville IEC, we have a number of community "partners" whom we work with and develop programs for our students! At the end of the program, students benefit immensely as their skills, talents and needs are met constantly. Our Special Skills class with teacher Ms D'Antonio attends every Thursday, Period 4 at Marrickville Youth Resource Centre, opposite the school, and works with Trevor, one of the staff there in engaging with the students to make art, to "think outside the box" of the actual Visual Arts program they are taught in classes at school. As one can see, the students look very happy with their work and are enjoying what they are producing! Even our Head Teacher, Mr Kametopoulos, is holding up some signs with adjectives chosen by the students on they what they think of him, as they themselves pick their own cards with adjectives that characterise them! A great learning activity with lots of language and of course lots of fun!

SPECIAL SKILLS-MOSAIC CLASS AT NSW UNI-Tuesday 12 August 2014

On Tuesday 12 August 2014 on a fairly cold and wet day, the Special Skills-MOSAIC class with their Head Teacher Mr Dimitrios Kametopoulos visited the University of New South Wales (NSW) at the Kensington campus to participate in a project Marrickville IEC has committed to. The MOSAIC project is a Sydney wide project organised by the ARC section of the University of NSW whereby High School students and IEC students have a voice to express their opinion on various issues in the modern world, eg on racism, multiculturalism, war, peace, refugees, growing up etc. On this day, the students took part in various ice-breaker games organised by University students and MOSAIC facilitators Denny and Gen and then they were guided to put their ideas on paper as a starting point. The IEC students had lots of fun in the Roundhouse and then they were taken on a tour around the University looking at buildings, amphitheatres and the Library.

Students from the University of NSW will be visiting the IEC every Thursday, Period 4 when Special Skills happens to help the IEC students continue working on their ideas and presentations. The IEC students will be submitting their works in poetry form or short story or in power point by the end of the term.

On Tuesday evening, 28 October at the University, there will be an EXPO Night held and all the works of students from participating High Schools and IECS will be presented to parents, teachers, other students and the community.

IEC YEAR 7 STUDENTS AT SYDNEY UNI-A GREAT DAY!-Friday 8 August 2014

On Friday 8 August 2014, our Year 7 students at the IEC participated in a fantastic program organised by the "Compass Program" at the University of Sydney. The students were accompanied by the Head Teacher Mr Dimitrios Kametopoulos, teacher Ms Francisca Castro and SLSO Teacher's Aide Ms Adella Kim. Although it was a little bit wet in the morning, the rest of the day cleared and the sun came out making the tour of the University a pleasant walk. The students sat in a university amphitheatre near the Main Quadrangle at the start of the day and were taken through a careers sheet to get them to think what they would like to do after they leave school, to to get them thinking of employment opportunities. Most of our students thought to become policemen, doctors, vets, computer engineers, teachers and social workers. Let's see how they go in 5-6 years time!

Then our students watched a brilliant performance from Gibber theatre in Maclaurin Hall. The actors presented a play of approximately 30 minutes in length about the prospects of going to university or aiming to go to higher education. Despite the many funny moments in the performance, the message was clear and loud: think what you would like to do and aim to go to a university!

The end of the day was spent visiting other buildings at Sydney University and meeting university students.

JEANS FOR GENES DAY-Friday 1 August 2014

Our IEC Student Representative Council (SRC) together with Marrickville High School's Student Representative Council organised on Friday 1 August a successful joint initiative to assist the Children's Medical Research Institute! Students had to show their support by wearing some jeans and by donating a gold coin ($1 or $2). Both SRC bodies sold bbq to the rest of the students as well as cakes. A lovely and supportive event from our school to the children in need! Well done, Marrickville!

At Marrickville IEC, every Term, the students choose who they would like to be on the SRC (Student Representative Council). This term we have some very enthusiastic students who make up the Term 3, 2014 SRC and who will be working with their SRC Coordinator Ms Sainsbury on different activities at the school as well as to help various organisations!

The first activity is Friday 1 August 2014, when the IEC will be supporting the "Jeans for Genes" day, collecting money for the Children's Medical Research Institute. This day is a "mufti day" but students are encouraged to wear jeans and give a gold coin donation ($1 or $2) for the research. Exciting times for Marrickville IEC!

Marrickville Metro Migrant Resource Centre is organising an important afternoon session for any new families that have come to Australia recently, providing them with the opportunity to understand the legal system in Australia, on Tuesday 24 June 2014, from 2.30pm-4.40pm.

WATCH A DEBATE AT MIEC!!

Please click onto our video below to appreciate our students' ability to debate in a Level 3 HSIE (Human Society and its Environment) classroom under the guidance of their teacher Ms Victoria Sainsbury on Wednesday 18 June 2014. Some of these students have great speaking/debating skills! This video snippet shows student Laura who is giving a presentation about the positives of Australia become a federation in 1901. The opposing team of course refuted this argument.

Our students at the IEC know very well how to keep a debate at a high level and to demonstrate their skills successfully. Go Marrickville!! You have the last word!

CAFE DIVERSITY NOW OPEN! IEC STUDENTS DOING BUSINESS!

Marrickville IEC students know how to make good coffee and to make their...customers happy! On Thursday 29 May 2014 ten students, who gained the "Barrista" Certificate at a TAFE approved one-day course at Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL, re-opened the school's cafe and the business was... booming during Lunchtime! The certificate was made possible through the students' Special Skills Elective 'Coffee School' at the start of Term 2, under the guidance of their teacher, Ms Anna Cowin. On Thursday, many students and teachers attended the "Cafe Diversity 308" opening and enjoyed a cup of coffee, including cappuccino, latte and flat white. Tea and hot chocolate were on the menu as well! This is a special program that the school initiated in 2013 with the invaluable assistance of Marrickville Metro Migrant Resource Centre and the financial suuport of Marrickville Rotary Club. This Special Skills Elective provides the opportunity for newly arrived students to gain important skills at the school level and to be able to gain work in a part-time capacity.

It is expected in Term 3 & 4, ten more students will be selecting to do this important Special Skills Elective, which will include theory and practice training in Term 3 and then include the opening and operation of "Cafe Diversity 308" in Term 4 in Room 308 of our school.

Parents and guardians are welcomed to come along, if they wish to support our initiative on Thursday 12 June at 12.55pm-1.35pm and taste a good cup of coffee. If this is the case, please come to the IEC Office at 12.45pm and let us know that you are here to go to "Cafe Diversity 308".

TECHNOLOGY NEWS FROM MARRICKVILLE IEC TERM 2, 2014

"BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE"

The Department of Education and Communities has initiated the "Bring Your Own Device" program since Term 1, this year. This allows students and of course teachers to access the WiFi of the school on their own laptops, smartphones, tablets etc. Students log on as per normal onto their device and then they have access to the Internet.

All IEC students this term and every new student will be receiving a special form to sign alongside with their parents or guardians, stating what device they bring or will bring to the school and writing on the form the serial number of that device. (If they do not bring their own device to school, then this should be stated on the form.) This is essential as any Internet access is recorded automatically onto the Data storage of the school and student log-ins on different sites can be checked on a daily or weekly basis. If the form is not filled out, then student access may be suspended temporarily.

INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARDS

As part of our National Partnerships' program with our host High school, Marrickville HS, we have invested in purchasing 3 more Interactive Whiteboards (IWBs) in our classrooms, bringing the total number of IWBs to 7 throughout the IEC. These have actually been installed already and will be used in our teaching and learning programs. Interactive whiteboards are a great technological tool, making learning meaningful and fun too! Our teachers have been preparing resources already!

Dear Families

Please note the from Saturday 12 April 2014 - Sunday 27 April 2014, (2 weeks), the IEC will be closed. The school email. marrickvil-i.school@det.nsw.edu.au will be checked periodically during this holiday period but responses to emails will not be always prompt.

Teachers and office staff will be back at school on Monday 28 April for School Development Day. The Office will be open for telephone or in-person enquiries on this day. There will be no lessons for students of course.

*** ALL STUDENTS must return to school on Tuesday 29 April at 8.30am for an 8.45am start. There will be an assembly at 8.45am for messages and Roll Call and then students will go to their new classes.

HARMONY DAY CELEBRATIONS AT MARRICKVILLE IEC-A fantastic and...delicious event!

There was lots of delicious food from many countries around the world, there was joining in of hands, there were human palms put on a school wall and very moving speeches! Harmony Day was celebrated in full swing at Marrickville High School with the Intensive English Centre (MIEC) students wearing something orange-the colour of Harmony Day- on Thursday 20 March 2014 and everyone had a fantastic time! At 12.00 o'clock the students gathered at the front garden of the school.

The event started with an "Acknowledgment to Country" by student Maholy Mendoza. Then the Head Teacher of Marrickville Intensive English Centre Mr Dimitrios Kametopoulos spoke of the importance of Harmony Day for all the people who live in Australia today. Mr Kametopoulos said that today we celebrate all the cultures of the people who live in Australia and who have chosen Australia as their home and pointed out that we show respect to one another. He welcomed everyone in over 25 languages, as many as the students, teaching and office staff speak at home, ranging from Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Bengali and Nepali to Italian, Greek, Spanish, Portuguese, Croatian, Russian and Danish! Then Mr Kametopoulos emphasised how Marrickville IEC is like a big family and everyone belongs here whether they are new migrants, International students or refugees! At the end of his speech, merit certificates were presented to the students by Marrickville High School Principal Ms Arety Dassaklis.

The event continued with a wonderful speech by student Salvatore Liu who focussed on world events and what Harmony Day means to him as an International student. The students were then asked to place their art design of a palm, on a school wall. Each palm had a message from them about harmony, peace and respect in English and other languages.

At the school oval, all students joined hands, making a huge circle to perform the famous musical item "Zorba the Greek" dance. The leaders of the dance were MIEC Greek background teachers Ms Margaritidis, Mr Skouras and students Afrodite Symani and Athanasia Karavapori. All students enjoyed that as it was fun kicking up their feet and calling out "opa"! Even the Principal Ms Arety Dassaklis joined in the fun showing off her… secret dancing talent, as she is of Greek origin herself!

After the dancing, students enjoyed delicious food from their countries, including Chinese fried rice, Greek spinach pies, Italian biscotti, South American prawn mix with herbs, Australian cakes and other tasty foods!!

A great event indeed was had by all to celebrate "Harmony Day" at Marrickville Intensive English Centre with enthusiastic students and staff!

At Marrickville Intensive English, we have students from several countries around the world. We have more than 25 languages spoken by students and staff here and it is a wonderful place to be and belong to! Our languages range from Arabic, Chinese, Danish, Italian and Greek to Mongolian, Nepali, Russian, Portuguese and Vietnamese!

On Thursday 20 March, our Student Representative Council and our Coordinating teacher are organising an event during the day to celebrate "Harmony Day", which is celebrated every year on March 21.

Students will present some items and some of them may bring a plate of food to share! it is all about belonging and working together, no matter where we come from. This is a great opportunity at our school for our newly arrived students to share what multicultural Australia is all about!

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY HERE AT MARRICKVILLE Friday 28 February 2014

If you see our school and its surrounds cleaner, this is because our Level 2 Marrickville IEC students and the Year 7 and Year 8 students at Marrickville High School, put their energies together on Friday 28 February on the last period of the day, with gloves and bins in their hands, in order to clean up the school and they did a great job!! This is an annual event for Clean Up Australia Day celebration and it happens on the first Sunday of March. This year it fell on Sunday 2 March! If you see our school cleaner, you know our students have contributed to it! Well done Marrickville!!

2013 PUBLIC SPEAKING SHOWCASE DAY-Friday 29 November 2013-CHESTER HILL IEC

Marrickville IEC has been running a Special Skills Program named "Public Speaking" with interested students and a dedicated teacher Mr Peter Greenland, once a week this year. This year, our school participated in an Inter IEC Public Speaking Showcase Day which was held on Friday 29 November at Chester Hill IEC. There were many people in attendance including the Manager of Multicultural Programs Unit of the Intensive English Program Ms Christine Tiekle, Sydney University professor Ken Cruikshank, many High School principals-amongst them Marrickville High School Principal Ms Arety Dassaklis and other guests. Students from 11 IECs participated in this wonderful event of oratory excellence on a wide range of topics! Marrickville was represented by Fan Yang & Abu Kebe who spoke respectively about "Obesity" and "The 3 levels of government in Australia". Well done to both of these students! Congratulations to the Head Teacher of Chester Hill IEC Ms Mee Lin Liau who had organised the event last year and continued with it this year! Marrickville IEC Head Teacher Mr Dimitrios Kametopoulos was the mc of this year's event!

LEAVERS' ASSEMBLY & PICNIC DAY-Tuesday 17 December & Wednesday 18 December

Marrickville is organising its 2014, Term 4 Leavers' Assembly in the School Hall on Tuedsay 17 December at 1.00pm - 3.00pm with nearly 40 students exiting and who are going to Marrickville High School, other High Schools and TAFE! This is always a big affair and this term will be the biggest that we have experienced! All immediate families are welcomed to join in this lovely event!

To conclude the school year for our students, the IEC students will be attending an excursion-Picnic Day on Wednesday 18 December at Nielsen Park. Information is given to the students about the day and it is expected to be a really good one with lots of memories.

The last two days of the Term will be School Development Days for the teachers, that is Thursday 19 December and Friday 20 December. The school will be open for telephone enquiries.

REUNION DAY-Wednesday 11 December 2013-GREAT MEMORIES

Marrickville IEC is like a big family and this is a known fact! For the last 2 years we have been organising through PSP funds a Reunion Day for all ex-IEC students who are studying at High School or are at TAFE to attend a Special day for them and for the current IEC students! On a beautiful sunny day on Wednesday 11 December, Marrickville High School was abuzz with 70 plus ex-IEC students who started trickling in from midday onwards. They re-met their school friends at the IEC and met new ones! There were nearly 250 students on the school grounds! There were quite a few tears as well amongst the students and some...staff too! Everyone enjoyed some delicious food and then danced with disco music in the School Hall. Although there was a lot of preparation for this on behalf of the teachers, it was very worthwhile! Marrickville IEC is looking forward to the next occasion of Reunion Day at the end of 2014!!

A great "Reunion Day" will take place for our ex students who left Marrickville IEC Term 1, Term 2 and Term 3 this year on Wednesday 11 December 2013 from 12.00pm. This is an important day as we will celebrate with our ex and current students our strong friendships! Ex students should receive a Special Invitation from Marrickville at their High School from their ESL teachers. Ex students must get the permission slip signed by their Principal and bring it to Marrickville on the day to join us. They also need to email or sms or ring to accept, so Marrickville IEC can put their name down as expected to attend.

REMEMBRANCE DAY AT MARRICKVILLE IEC & HS-Monday 11 November 2013 at 11.00am-LEST WE FORGET!

On Monday 11, the 11th of the month (November 2013), at 11.00 o'clock all students at Marrickville IEC and Marrickville High School alongside with all the Teaching and Office Staff gathered in the School Hall to commemorate a special day: Remembrance Day or Armistice Day. It was one of the most solemn ceremonies the school has ever had as students and staff paid their respects towards our fallen heroes. The HS students ran the Assembly whilst the keynote speakers were the Principal of Marrickville HS Ms Arety Dassaklis and the Head Teacher of Marrickville IEC Mr Dimitrios Kametopoulos. Both speakers emphasised the importance of the day and what it meant to modern Australians. Marrickville HS Music teacher Ms Crystal Barecca played "The Last Post" on a trumpet and after a one minute silence was observed. Marrickville HS teachers Ms Vasiliki Karmogianni and Ms Katerina Kanellis organised the event with the assistance of the Year 10 students. The IEC students experienced a great event and it is certain that they appreciated once again that Australia is a safe and free place around the world and all Australians of all cultural and language backgrounds are a great country and nation.

SYDNEY UNIVERSITY VISIT-Thursday 31 October 2013. A GREAT DAY!!

On Thursday 31 October 2013, on a lovely sunny day, Marrickville IEC junior students, from Years 7 & 8, (alongside with junior students from Kogarah IEC), visited Sydney University and experienced a unique day there. The whole day was sponsored by our partners, the COMPASS PROGRAM, who paid for the transport, the food and the souvenirs from the University. Victoria Loy and Sylvia Utami, Compass Program Coordinators with their Sydney University Compass Program ambassadors, who were wearing their yellow characteristic yellow shirts, took our students on a tour of the university, starting off from the Main Quad. The students were later divided up into 4 groups and the students experienced some exciting activties, eg fencing, singing and rock climbing! On the visit to Fisher Library, the students saw some very rare books and the librarians explained these books to them as well as some other very very old items. After all that, the students were given a talk in the Main Hall by an ex IEC student from Cabramatta IEC, who was studying at university. The last event was the completion of an evaluation of the day. By the looks on the students' faces, all of them had an unforgettable day!

IEC EXCURSIONS TERM 4-WEEK 4

Dear Families

Marrickville IEC is organising some exciting excursions during the week commencing Monday 28 October 2013. Our students will thoroughly enjoy them!

Wednesday 30 October: All IEC students will be visiting Bondi and appreciating the "Sculptures by the Sea". This will be an invaluable experience!! They will see many many sculptures and they will enjoy them for sure! Our Visual Arts teacher Ms D'Antonio is organising this.

Thursday 31 October: Our junior IEC students will be attending a Sydney University experience day where they will be taken on a tour at the university, ask questions, meet students and professors and perhaps aim to...go to university in a few years time! The excursion is funded entirely by our partners at the University, the "Compass Program". The Head Teacher Mr Kametopoulos is organising this.

2013 TERM 3 LEAVERS' ASSEMBLY-Thursday 19 September

Marrickville IEC held its 2013 Term 3 Assembly on Thursday 19 September. As always, it was a sentimental affair as the Leavers were presented with their Leaving Certificates and prizes and some of them had a few tears in their eyes. The Head Teacher Mr Kametopoulos and the Principal Ms Dassaklis gave speeches at the opening of the Assembly and spoke highly of the group of the leaving students and both spoke about the importance for them to do well in their studies at High school, whether at Marrickville High School or other High Schools. The performances were great, as everyone said, which included the Drumming performance with the Drumming Special Elective under the guidance of Counsellor Ms Waldersee, the singing group as well as the hip-hop dances.

SYDNEY UNI & SEYMOUR THEATRE VISIT WITH THE COMPASS PROGRAM-Friday 13 September 2013

If you thought Friday 13 is not a good day because that's what people... may think, if they are superstitious, at Marrickville IEC our students and teachers had a wonderful day on Friday 13 September 2013, when they were given the opportunity to visit Sydney University and watch a lively performance at the nearby Seymour Theatre!

The excursion was organised by our school with the help of our partners, Sylvia Utami and Victoria Loy from the Compass Program who provided buses for us whilst the tickects for the theatre were given from the theatre director to our school. What an opportunity it was! Actually, all of these people spoke to our students before the performance.

The play was called "Happy as Larry". It was full of dance, music and miming. No...speaking at all. Our students enjoyed it thoroughly and they appeared...happy as Larry by the end as well as enthused by the professional young actors! Our students were also enthused walking through the famous Graffitti Tunnel of Sydney University. Some of the teachers who came along, remembered their university years at Sydney university, including the Head Teacher Mr Kametopoulos.

What a performance and a day! Bravo!

READING VOLUNTEERS CAN JOIN IN AT MARRICKVILLE IEC!

Marrickville Intensive English Centre is a great school that helps young secondary aged students from 12 years old to 18 years old who have recently arrived from overseas before they enrol at their High School!

We are seeking any volunteers to start now or in Term 4 who would like to come on a weekly basis for an hour or two and spend that time helping our students read in English, during our Reading timetabled periods that are taught by one of the IEC teachers. Please ring through to the school and ask how to join in on 9550 0251. Reading Volunteers need to bring some identification with them, complete some forms and then they are trained for the Reading program.

This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity for those people in our community who would like to give back to the school!

THE ROTARY CLUB HELPS IEC STUDENTS FOR BARRISTA TRAINING!

An important event took place at Marrickville High School on Tuesday 13 August 2013 with the... aroma of coffee making its presence around the school.

A tendering of a cheque from the Rotary Club of Marrickville by its recent president Mr Johan Naayen to Marrickville Metro Migrant Resource Centre for the Barrista Coffee training of newly arrived students in Australia, was the pinnacle of the continued success of the coffee school program. The cheque was accepted by CEO of Marrickville Metro Migrant Resource Centre Ms Esta Paschalidis-Chilas.

Present were Marrickville High School Principal Ms Arety Dassaklis, Marrickville Intensive English Centre Head Teacher Mr Dimitrios Kametopoulos, Marrickville Mayor Councillor Victor Macri, Marrickville Metro Migrant Resource Centre Grant Settlements Project Officer Ms Litsa Nossar, IEC Special Skills teacher Ms Joanne D'Antonio and other staff and personnel of the school.

Both Ms Dassaklis and Mr Kametopoulos thanked the Rotary Club for its generosity with the cheque donation which is going to be pivotal in the continuation of the Barrista Coffee training program and the school's operation of Café Diversity.

Ms Paschalidis-Chilas emphasised in her speech the importance of three organisations working together, that is Marrickville High School and the IEC, the Rotary Club and Marrickville Metro Resource Centre, for the benefit of our youth.

Marrickville Mayor, Clr Victor Macri, reiterated the Council's support for projects like these, as it was the Council which first provided a seeding grant a few years ago. He said he was looking forward to having plenty of coffees at Marrickville High School!

Mr Naayen in his speech mentioned the significance of the moment, as the Rotary Club recognised the value behind this program, "ticking all the boxes", as he said characteristically. This money will help newly arrived students in Australia to engage with the community and broaden their horizons for employment.

For their work in this field, thanks were given to Ms Litsa Nossar for her close working with Marrickville IEC and IEC staff member, Ms Joanne Dantonio for her initiatives and programming of the necessary English language skills for the students in the Coffee School Special Skills classes.

Year 10 students, Christos Steletos, a migrant from Greece and Youssef Abdullah, a migrant from Syria, who both attended the IEC in the recent past and now are continuing their studies at Marrickville High School served coffee, flat whites and long blacks.. of course, as well as French and Greek cakes and cheese pies, to all members present at this event, making it a very multicultural event.

Marrickville High and Marrickville IEC celebrated on Thursday 25 July 2013 the Aboriginal or Indigenous people's contribution in Australia, as the first people of this new land. The Hall was full of students, teachers and guests. Dear Families and Students

Marrickville Intensive English Centre is celebrating Indigenous culture and our Aboriginal population of Australia, by attending Thursday's important assembly on the 25th July. The week between 22-26 July is known in Australia as NAIDOC Week.

During Weeks 3 & 4, (29 July - 9 August), the IEC students will be involved in Swimming Lessons at Enmore Pool in the afternoons. This is a compulsory program and students will receive relevant notes to take home. There will be a change to the students' timetables. In any case, our students should be receiving excellent lessons by our teachers and Swimming teachers from the Department of Education. After our instructions will be ready for the summer and the sometimes unpredicatable waters surrounding Australia!

Marrickville IEC as all IECs and High Schools in NSW will be starting classes on Tuesday 16 July 2013 for Term 3.

On Monday 15 July, teachers are involved in seminars and meetings all day but any family who wishes to ring through and enquire, they can do so by ring our Office on 9550 0521 during business hours.

All students must attend Tuesday 16 July at 8.30am for an 8.45am start. There will be an assembly in the morning and then students will be told to go their class. A SPECIAL WELCOME to our many new students-international and non-international-who are enrolled already or will be enrolled in the coming weeks. It is a REAL PLEASURE to host new students from around the world.

With this opportunity, I would like to thank Ms Caroline Holmes for being the relieving Head Teacher during the last few weeks of Term 1 and all of Term 2, whilst I was on Leave. Term 2 had many and varied challenges but with the leadership of Ms Holmes, the great professionalism of the IEC staff and of course the general leadership of our Principal, Ms Arety Dassaklis, Marrickville High School's Principal, I am certain that everything went according to plan. CAFE DIVERSITY OPENING-12.30pm-Thursday 29 November 2012

After nearly 2 years in planning and meeting with a variety of people at school, in businesses and other organisations, our IEC has started up the School Coffee Club "Café Diversity" and will have an official opening on Thursday 29 November 2012. A number of our students have been trained in the Barrista Coffee Training course during 2012. A very important player in this project has been Marrickville Council by providing us with a significant amount of money to set up and run the cafe and Marrickville Metro Migrant Resource Centre though one of its case workers, Ms Litsa Nossar who has been an invaluable person in helping right along with this common project. The students who are currently in the Special Skills Program Cafe Class under the guidance of their teacher Ms D'Antonio have been practising their skills for many weeks and are ready for this opening event in Room 308. All parents of our students are welcomed to come along at 12.30pm-1.30pm for some coffee and light refreshments.

SYDNEY UNIVERSITY COMPASS PROGRAM VISIT-Friday 9 November 2012

All Year 7 & 8 students from our school were invited to attend a special day at Sydney University on Friday 9 November 2012 through the "Compass Program". IEC Teacher Mr John Skouras, and School Learning Support Officer-Korean Ms Adella Kim came along too, as well as the undersigned, Head Teacher Mr Dimitrios Kametopoulos. It was a fantastic day indeed, although the weather was humid and hot at the start and then in the afternoon it poured! Our students were given a yellow "Compass Program" bag with lots of leaflets in it and other things. Under the guidance of Sydney University "Compass Program" coordinator Victoria Loy, other coordinators and University student-ambassadors from the "Compass Program", wearing their characteristic yellow shirts, MIEC students were taken on a tour around the University through the beautiful sandstone Main Quad building, to the Nicholson Museum where we were shown the history about mummies as well as some real mummies on display, the Macleay Museum with its animals, rare insects and fish on display and then of course for a walk through the famous Graffiti tunnel! Our students had lunch on the lawns and then moved to another university building for a fun quiz at the end of the day! Morning tea was served earlier in the morning by the Compass students with lots of fruit around.

Kogarah IEC students were there too. MIEC students had the opportunity to meet and greet the students from Kogarah. Many of them came from the same country eg from Greece, Lebanon, Thailand, China, Vietnam, South America and from other parts of the globe and they got together to talk about their experiences at their schools and living in Australia. What a fantastic opportunity this was!

Thank you to Sydney University and the wonderful team from the "Compass Program"! All students and the teachers as well had a fabulous time. Our Year 7 & 8 students now will work harder...to make it to university! How inspirational is that?

LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL & LEAVERS' ASSEMBLY TERM 3, 2012-Thursday 20 September 2012

And..... Term 3, 2012, school has come to a close now! The IEC had a beautiful Leavers' Assembly on Thursday 20 September 2012, in Marrickville High School Hall and there were many people there, including our Principal Ms Diane Fetherston, the High School ESL Teacher and International Students' Coordinator Mr Derek Hampton, Ms Litsa Nossar from Marrickville Metro Migrant Resource Centre and others.

The Assembly had lots of music and performances by our students as well as very nice farewell speeches which brought a tear to some eyes! We said farewell to Kelly Nguyen, Eva Tao, David Dao, Helen Li, Tiffany Yue, Tim Pham, Ita Widyanti and Bob Xu.

On Friday 21 September the students went to Shelley Beach at Manly and enjoyed the ferry ride as well as their stay there for the day. A nice close to a very busy term! The students returned home exhausted but excited as well!

School starts again on MONDAY 8 OCTOBER, so all students must be here at 8.30am for Assembly at 8.45am. Then they will get their new timetables and start Term 4 classes! In the meantime, enjoy the spring holidays from Saturday 22 September 2012-Sunday 7 October 2012.

MOSAIC SPECIAL SKILLS-NSW UNI STUDENTS VISIT-Thursday 6 September 2012

If you have been wondering, who were those young looking faces around Marrickville High School and the Intensive English Centre wearing BRIGHT PINK t-shirts, don't worry!

These young people are from the University of NSW and the MOSAIC program, which our IEC is taking part for the first time and we are the first IEC to do so!

The university students, Paul, Sid, Yan and Geetho, came on Thursday 6 September 2012 and gave some assistance and guidance to our class as the IEC students are busy finalising their works (short stories, pictures, posters etc) before they give them in on Friday 14 September 2012! The class is taught by Mr J Skouras and Mr D Kametopoulos. The student works will be on display on Tuesday 23 October 2012, at the Roundhouse of NSW uni and all families are invited of course!

EXCELLENT SPEAKERS AT MIEC-Wednesday 29 August 2012

At Marrickville IEC, there is no doubt we have excellent speakers, that is students who speak their home language perfectly but who also have gained fantastic English skills as they study here!

On Wednesday 29 August 2012, our IEC with another 6 IECs from Sydney, got together in the annual "Oratory Competition" at Chester Hill IEC. It was an excellent day! There were 17 students who gave a 3 minute speech on a topic that they chose which had relevance today.

Our students did extremely well, they had passion in what they were saying and they were applauded loudly by the audience. It was a very hard contest and the judges did have a difficult time choosing the winners. Despite not winning the first 3 prizes, our MIEC students, Bob Xu, Amienata Kamara and Eva Tao performed extremely well. Bob spoke about the Olympic Games, Amienata and Eva chose to speak about Racism today. In the photo they are holding their partcipation certificates.

Congratulations to the 3 of them and their "Special Skills"-Public Speaking teachers, Ms V. Sainsbury and Ms F. Klavins for their hard work in preparing them for the big day!

One thing is for sure: Bob, Amienata and Eva have gained brilliant communication skills, which they can use in their High School and perhaps profession they choose! They are able to be persuasive in their arguments!!

MIEC AT COCKATOO ISLAND & BIENNALE EXHIBITION-Wednesday 22 August 2012

On Wednesday 22 August 2012, all the students of Marrickville IEC had a wonderful day excursion at Cockatoo Island to view the interesting art works in the Biennale exhibition. Students caught the train and then a ferry over to the middle of beautiful Sydney Harbour. The weather was like spring, sunny and warm: a real blessing!

It was a great day and as we can see from the photos, the students and teachers had a fantastic time. Students had the opportunity to view and feel for themselves about the past of Cockatoo island and the items on display! Many thanks to our Visual Arts teacher, Ms Joanne Dantonio for organising this event.

WEAR YOUR FAVOURITE COLOUR DAY-Monday 20 August 2012

If you thought this photo might be "tweety" at school working on the computer, you are forgiven! The photo is our IEC Teacher Mr Michael Sagan, who dressed up in his favourite colour, yellow, to help our worthy cause!!

The Student Representative Council or SRC at MIEC is organising a Special Day on Monday 20 August 2012, named "Wear your favourite Colour Day". Students can choose their own colour and come to school in those clothes. If they do so, they are asked to pay a gold coin donation, either $1 or $2 and this money will be going towards the "MS Readathon" for children who suffer from Multiple Sclerosis.

On Friday 24 August 2012, the SRC with its co-ordinating teacher, Ms Victoria Sainsbury, will be holding a BBQ to help raise some further money for this very worthy cause and in the afternoon, students will have to read for at least one period a book that they like, in English or their own language!

So, wear your favourite colour, red, black, blue, yellow, orange, pink, purple...... and support our fellow human beings. "Tweet-tweet"!

SPECIAL SKILLS: GARDENING & HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT

MIEC has a variety of Special Skills classes that operate every Thursday, Period 4. One can check what these Special Skills classes are for every term by clicking on our Key Learning Area tab.

This term, Term 3, we are offering "Gardening & helping the Environment" with our IEC teacher Mr John Paraschos who has a keen interest in this as he does a lot of gardening at home as well. So, it is no wonder that he inspires our students to get involved in the school gardens and even in their own at home. One thing is for sure, all of them are helping our environment!

On Thursday 16 August 2012, both Mr Paraschos and the students did some tree and seed study!

MIEC MOSAIC VISIT NSW UNI-Friday 3 August 2012-A GREAT DAY!

What a FANTASTIC day our students had on Friday 3 August 2012-even the weather was lovely and sunny for winter!! Our students who are in the Special Skills class "MOSAIC" which happens every Thursday during period 4, alongside with their teacher, Mr Kametopoulos, visited the University of New South Wales (NSW) in Kensington to understand further about the "MOSAIC" program. The program is explained on our website, in the Key Learning Ares tab and in the Special Skills folder.

We were all greeted by Mr Ye Yan, the Department of Education's Sydney Region Commmunity Liaison Officer and by many university students. The university students played ice-breaker games with our MIEC students in the morning, then they went to a special room to talk about Multiculturalism, Racism and Freedom and towards the end of the day they did some group posters with the map of the world.

The university students will be coming to MIEC during Term 3 for a few weeks to help our students in the "MOSAIC" program. Students will be producing a project that has something on the themes talked about. These works will be submitted to the University before the end of Term 3 and then they will be on public display at the "Roundhouse" of the University in late October. All families will be invited to celebrate the students' works. About 6 High schools schools in the Sydney Region are participating in this annual program and we are the FIRST IEC to do so as well. An exciting moment for our students and our school!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE IEC-PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

Congratulations to our IEC students: Mary Hoang, Amber Kamara, Bob Xu, Sally Vu, Jenny Yu, Tina Zhang, Angela Guo, Mia Luu and Jiaming Yin for coming Runners-Up in the Anti-Discrimination Board's Competition "Celebrate Diversity in our Community" at the end of Term 2. The photo competition was organised with Marrickville Youth Resource Centre and the organisors were very happy with the results and so were we!

Congratulations to our students once again! Some of them have gone to their high schools and the others are still with the IEC! This just shows how talented they are!

Marrickville IEC wishes all its families a lovely Winter 2 week holiday from Saturday 30 June - Monday 16 July 2012.

School starts again for students on Tuesday 17 July 2012. All students must be at school at 8.30am for an 8.45am Assembly.

On Thursday 28 June, the IEC had a wonderful and rather emotional Leavers' Assembly. 21 students from our Centre have left and are going to start High School or TAFE next term. Goodbye to the following students:

Our Leavers' Assembly said also goodbye to Marrickville High School Principal Mr Richard Symons as he is retiring from Friday 29 June 2012, after a decade at the High School. Mr Symons was present at the IEC Assembly whilst earlier in the morning, another assembly was organised to farewell him as well by the High School students! We all thank him for his support of the IEC and wish him and his family well! We hope to see him back some time to tell us what he is occupying himself with! Enjoy your retirement!

THANK YOU!! INTERNATIONAL FOOD FESTIVAL AFTERNOON-Tuesday 19 June 2012

Chinese rice, Indian samosas, Vietnamese rolls, Greek cheesepie tiropita, Spanish paella....all sound and taste great! That is for sure!

Marrickville Intensive English Centre with the generous help of Marrickville Council held an

" IEC International Food Festival Afternoon"

during Refugee Week on Tuesday 19 June 2012. Marrickville Council helped with the food and different mini-events during the afternoon for our students to celebrate the week!

Student brought a plate of food from their country, shared it with other students and teachers, listened to an important talk about Refugees from well known Marrickville personality Fatmata Bangura, watched a Sierra Leonian dance, followed closely the words of an Artist and participated in a fun, multicultural quiz with 30 questions, towards the end of the day.

The winning team received prizes for their answers! Congratulations to all students.

3 students also spoke about their countries and about settling in Australia, receiving many applauds by the other students and the audience for their great effort in public speaking.

The IEC celebrated Refugee Week alongside Marrickville Council and in particular with the coordination of Ms Dina Petrakis, Events Coordinator, and in general students appreciated those people who are refugees and who struggle to get to freedom!!

Many partners were present at the Youth Resource Centre on Tuesday 19 June 2012 and these were: Marrickville Youth Resource Centre, Marrickville Metro Migrant Resource Centre, Centrelink, Marrickville Refugee Women's Network and others.

We thank everyone for a most memorable day! And we thank ALL THE FAMILIES for their time and effort to send a plate of their country's food with their children to school! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

SMALL AMOUNT FOR A BIG CAUSE!! A GREAT COMMUNITY SPIRIT!

On Friday 8 June, the SRC (Student Representative Council) organised a BBQ to help make some money for the Childrens' Hospital and for the children who have cancer! This was a great afternoon as all the sausages and drinks were snapped up like "hotcakes"!

The students helped raise the amount of $432 which will be going to the Hospital. A small amount but for a BIG cause and as a small IEC, we are very proud for that amount! Our school, Marrickville Intensive English Centre, was actually mentioned on TV on Sunday 10 June, during a Telethon.

Congratulations to the SRC Coordinator, Ms Sainsbury and to all the SRC students!

ART GALLERY OF NSW EXCURSION: Friday 29th June 2012

Our Parents and Guardians are invited to the scheduled Parent-Teacher Afternoon on Thursday 14 June 2012 from 4.00pm-6.00pm, in Marrickville High School Library.

This is an opportunity for the families of our students to attend this school event, to meet the teachers and to discuss about their childrens' progress at the Intensive English Centre. Students will be bringing home a note to invite their families and we ask that parents and guardians do sign it and do ensure that they come on that afternoon. Coffee and tea will be served as well.

Drama in Schools

This term Level 2J are very lucky to be participating in the Drama in Schools program. The program is run with the Sydney Theatre Company and the school. Every week, an actress from the theatre company comes into the class and team teaches with the English teacher. The focus of the program is to build oral literacy skills. Students are really enjoying the program and getting a great opportunity to practise their oral English skills.

Centennial Park

On Friday 11th of May all level one students visited Centennial Park for bike riding. Students caught the train to Bondi Junction and walked down to the park. Many students learned to ride a bike and a lot of fun was had by all. Students spoke a lot of English!

Sculpture by the Sea

On the 9th November 2011 Marrickville Intensive English Centre will visit sculpture by the sea. The National Australia Bank has kindly sponsored the whole school to attend the exhibition. Students will part take in sculpture workshops run by the artists themselves. After that students will walk along the Bondi cliffs to view the art works whilst taking in the beautiful sights of the East Coast Walk.

In week 5 all students at Marrickville Intensive English Centre will be participating in swimming lessons at Petersham Pool. Students will take part in graded swimming lessons to help then to learn to swim or to help improve their swimming skills.
