Key learning areas

Students at Marrickville Intensive English Centre (MIEC) study English through the 10 Key Learning Areas.

Students learn English while studying the Key Learning Areas (KLAs). These subjects help prepare students for the academic challenges of an Australian High School.  The school places students into three different English Language levels:

  • Level 1 - Beginners
  • Level 2 - Intermediate
  • Level 3 - Upper intermediate/advanced

When and how do students exit or leave the Program?

Students usually exit to high school or TAFE from level 3 or level 2, if their English has reached an attainable level for them to be successful at their next stage of their studies or if they have exhausted their allowable time of stay at the Intensive English Centre (IEC). The average stay of students at the IEC is 3 terms. Students may exit after 4 or maximum 5 terms, if they need more English before they enrol in their high school of choice.

The 10 KLAs are:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Information technology (computers)
  • Human Society and its Environment-History/Geography/Civics (HSIE)
  • Visual arts
  • Music
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Personal Development (PD)
  • Special skills program.

More information about each KLA is avaliable on the "Subject Areas" link on the right hand side of this page.
